Welcome back to Something New! The weather has changed quite a bit and I am back with some incredible weddings and engagements shoots. I thought it was quite fitting to start with this beautiful engagement shoot by Miki Photography. Jo and Patrick ventured outside and embraced the coat-wearing weather. And I really do love a puddle shot! Thank you for sharing these with us Jo and I can’t wait to show everyone your incredible wedding pictures in a few weeks time!
So I will let Jo tell you all about her engagement shoot.
When and where did you get engaged?
In September 2017 – on holiday in Tuscany. My Dad is Italian and I’ve been to the Tuscan coast on holiday there every September since I was born so it’s a really special place. I once told Patrick that all the important conversations in my life have taken place in the sea off Torre Del Lago beach so that’s where he asked me to marry him. It was a wonderful surprise as we’d only moved in together 2 weeks before so I didn’t think it was on the cards yet. The day after he asked me, we went to Lucca to buy a ‘placeholder’ ring until we got home and over lunch, we started planning the wedding. It was perfect.
How did you feel having your engagement photographs taken?
We felt a bit awkward because we’ve never done anything like that before but our photographer Ash was amazing, really relaxed and chatty so it was just like going for a walk with some friends. We also took our dog Stella who was still a puppy then at only 4 months so that really broke the ice.
Where did you go for the shoot and why did you choose this place?
We went to the grounds of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire near where we live and near where I grew up. Not only is it a beautiful place but Chatsworth is somewhere I always went with my Mum who we lost to cancer in 2014. Most of her ashes are scattered there by a tree with a lovely view of Chatsworth House. That made it even more special and we took some pictures of us with Mum’s tree.
What was the most important reason for having an engagement shoot? Was it to get some lovely photos together or was it a good way to practice before the big day?
We wouldn’t have thought of it but when we booked Ash Davenport from Miki Photography as our wedding photographer the engagement shoot was included as part of our wedding package. Ash told us that he gets much better pictures on the wedding day if the bride and groom have got to know him a bit before and vice versa. I guess it helped us relax and be more ourselves in front of the camera. Ash’s wedding photos are amazing so we trusted him and went for it. Also, we knew our dog Stella won’t be a puppy forever and it was a great opportunity to get some professional photos of her.
Any advice for nervous brides who don’t like having their photograph taken?
I’d say to pick a photographer you trust and then do what they suggest. If you just go with it you’re more likely to end up with pictures you like. And it’s great practice for the big day – the more comfortable you are having your picture taken the better the results and an engagement shoot is a great time to practice. Also – it was really good fun. A lovely day and we have the pictures so we’ll always remember.
I absolutely love sharing engagement shoots, especially when they feature a puppy as beautiful as Stella. Thank you so much Jo & Patrick. We really can’t wait to share your wedding photographs soon. Thank you to Miki Photography.
